William Clinton, brother of Henry Clinton, began his military service in 1784. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1787, captain in 1790, and lieutenant colonel in 1794. He was made aide-de-camp to the Duke of York in 1796 and was promoted to colonel in 1801. He governed Madeira as brigadier general in 1801 and was made quartermaster general in Ireland in 1804.
